Osteoarthritis of the hip joint

Osteoarthritis of the hip joint

Coxarthrosis or osteoarthritis of the hip joint is a disease that belongs to degenerative-dystrophic diseases. Coxarthrosis mainly affects middle-aged and elderly people. The disease develops gradually, over several years. Coxarthrosis is often accompanied by pain and restriction of movement in the joint, and already in the late stages, atrophy of the thigh muscles and shortening of the limb are observed. The causes of coxarthrosis can be various factors, including injuries, congenital pathology, pathological curvatures of the spinal column (kyphosis, scoliosis), as well as inflammatory and non-inflammatory diseases. In case of destruction of the joint, especially in young and middle-aged patients, surgery (endoprosthesis) is indicated. In orthopedics and traumatology, coxarthrosis is one of the most common arthrosis. The high frequency of its development is due to the significant load on the hip joint and the wide prevalence of congenital pathology - joint dysplasia. According to some data, women suffer from coxarthrosis more often than men.

The diagnosis of coxarthrosis is made based on the patient's complaints, objective examination data, and X-ray examination.

For the diagnosis of hip osteoarthritis, the main method of examination remains radiography. Performing radiography in several projections allows you to clarify the diagnosis, establish the severity and spread of the pathological process, as well as assess the dynamics of the treatment. This method of examination is well known, available in almost any clinic and does not require special preparation, except for a cleansing enema to avoid obscurations in the image caused by the contents of the large intestine.

It should be remembered that changes detected during hip joint radiography cannot serve as the sole criterion for diagnosing coxarthrosis. The fact is that in most elderly people, changes in the articular surfaces can be detected during X-ray examination, therefore, in order to avoid overdiagnosis of coxarthrosis, a combination of X-ray and characteristic clinical manifestations of the disease is necessary.

In cases where traditional radiography does not allow for an accurate diagnosis, modern research methods come to the rescue, such as computed tomography of the hip joint, which allows for a targeted study of pathological changes in bone structures, and magnetic resonance imaging, which is used to detect changes in bone structures and soft tissues.
